In a virtual reality environment, a user experiences immersion, or the feeling of being inside and a part of that world. He is also able to interact with his environment in meaningful ways. The combination of a sense of immersion and interactivity is called telepresence. Computer scientist Jonathan Steuer defined it as “the extent to which one feels present in the mediated environment, rather than in the immediate physical environment.” In other words, an effective VR experience causes you to become unaware of your real surroundings and focus on your existence inside the virtual environment.
Jonathan Steuer proposed two main components of immersion: depth of information and breadth of information. Depth of information refers to the amount and quality of data in the signals a user receives when interacting in a virtual environment. For the user, this could refer to a display’s resolution, the complexity of the environment’s graphics, the sophistication of the system’s audio output, etc. Steuer defines breadth of information as the “number of sensory dimensions simultaneously presented.” A virtual environment experience has a wide breadth of information if it stimulates all your senses. Most virtual environment experiences prioritize visual and audio components over other sensory-stimulating factors, but a growing number of scientists and engineers are looking into ways to incorporate a users’ sense of touch. Systems that give a user force feedback and touch interaction are called haptic systems.
For immersion to be effective, a user must be able to explore what appears to be a life-sized virtual environment and be able to change perspectives seamlessly. If the virtual environment consists of a single pedestal in the middle of a room, a user should be able to view the pedestal from any angle and the point of view should shift according to where the user is looking. Dr. Frederick Brooks, a pioneer in VR technology and theory, says that displays must project a frame rate of at least 20 - 30 frames per second in order to create a convincing user experience.

Today, most VE systems are powered by normal personal computers. PCs are sophisticated enough to develop and run the software necessary to create virtual environments. Graphics are usually handled by powerful graphics cards originally designed with the video gaming community in mind. The same video card that lets you play World of Warcraft is probably powering the graphics for an advanced virtual environment.

VE systems need a way to display images to a user. Many systems use HMDs, which are headsets that contain two monitors, one for each eye. The images create a stereoscopic effect, giving the illusion of depth. Early HMDs used cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors, which were bulky but provided good resolution and quality, or liquid crystal display (LCD) monitors, which were much cheaper but were unable to compete with the quality of CRT displays. Today, LCD displays are much more advanced, with improved resolution and color saturation, and have become more common than CRT monitors.
Other VE systems project images on the walls, floor and ceiling of a room and are called Cave Automatic Virtual Environments (CAVE). The University of Illinois-Chicago designed the first CAVE display, using a rear projection technique to display images on the walls, floor and ceiling of a small room. Users can move around in a CAVE display, wearing special glasses to complete the illusion of moving through a virtual environment. CAVE displays give users a much wider field of view, which helps in immersion. They also allow a group of people to share the experience at the same time (though the display would track only one user’s point of view, meaning others in the room would be passive observers). CAVE displays are very expensive and require more space than other systems.
Closely related to display technology are tracking systems. Tracking systems analyze the orientation of a user’s point of view so that the computer system sends the right images to the visual display. Most systems require a user to be tethered with cables to a processing unit, limiting the range of motions available to him. Tracker technology developments tend to lag behind other VR technologies because the market for such technology is mainly VR-focused. Without the demands of other disciplines or applications, there isn’t as much interest in developing new ways to track user movements and point of view.
Input devices are also important in VR systems. Currently, input devices range from controllers with two or three buttons to electronic gloves and voice recognition software. There is no standard control system across the discipline. VR scientists and engineers are continuously exploring ways to make user input as natural as possible to increase the sense of telepresence. Some of the more common forms of input devices are:

In the early 1990's, the public's exposure to virtual reality rarely went beyond a relatively primitive demonstration of a few blocky figures being chased around a chessboard by a crude pterodactyl. While the entertainment industry is still interested in virtual reality applications in games and theater experiences, the really interesting uses for VR systems are in other fields.
Some architects create virtual models of their building plans so that people can walk through the structure before the foundation is even laid. Clients can move around exteriors and interiors and ask questions, or even suggest alterations to the design. Virtual models can give you a much more accurate idea of how moving through a building will feel than a miniature model.
Car companies have used VR technology to build virtual prototypes of new vehicles, testing them thoroughly before producing a single physical part. Designers can make alterations without having to scrap the entire model, as they often would with physical ones. The development process becomes more efficient and less expensive as a result.
Virtual environments are used in training programs for the military, the space program and even medical students. The military have long been supporters of VR technology and development. Training programs can include everything from vehicle simulations to squad combat. On the whole, VR systems are much safer and, in the long run, less expensive than alternative training methods. Soldiers who have gone through extensive VR training have proven to be as effective as those who trained under traditional conditions.
In medicine, staff can use virtual environments to train in everything from surgical procedures to diagnosing a patient. Surgeons have used virtual reality technology to not only train and educate, but also to perform surgery remotely by using robotic devices. The first robotic surgery was performed in 1998 at a hospital in Paris. The biggest challenge in using VR technology to perform robotic surgery is latency, since any delay in such a delicate procedure can feel unnatural to the surgeon. Such systems also need to provide finely-tuned sensory feedback to the surgeon.
Another medical use of VR technology is psyc­hological therapy. Dr. Barbara Rothbaum of Emory University and Dr. Larry Hodges of the Georgia Institute of Technology pioneered the use of virtual environments in treating people with phobias and other psychological conditions. They use virtual environments as a form of exposure therapy, where a patient is exposed -- under controlled conditions -- to stimuli that cause him distress. The application has two big advantages over real exposure therapy: it is much more convenient and patients are more willing to try the therapy because they know it isn't the real world. Their research led to the founding of the company Virtually Better, which sells VR therapy systems to doctors in 14 countries.

Just think you bought a new expensive phone or you have already that and your phone is lost. It feels like you lost your girlfriend/boyfriend or your wife/husband tell you for divorce. It is a big problem to find or track your phone. Maybe you just not get upset for your phone more than your private and important data, contacts, messages and applications. Now after reading this blog you can track your phone, backup and delete your data from phone remotely. Before you start shopping for your next handset, there are a few things you can still try. All major smartphone platforms offer an easy, built-in method to track your device when it's not with you, and they are extremely effective too.

iPhone

You can use Apple's Find My iPhone service and can track a phone's physical location, and more. But it needs to be switched on - hopefully, if you've already lost your phone, then Find My iPhone was already on, but if you still have the phone with you, the first thing you want to do is turn this setting on.
  1. On your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone.
  2. Make sure that the switch next to Find My iPhone is in the green on position.
You can now track your iOS device using an app on another iPhone or iPad, or using the browser. This is how the app works:
  1. Download the Find My iPhone app on your iOS device.
  2. Sign in with your iCloud account - the same one you're using on the iPhone you're trying to find.
  3. Now all the devices that are signed in to that iCloud account will be listed in the app.
  4. Tap any device to see its location.
In case you've misplaced the iPhone, then this should help you track it down, but you will see some more options at the bottom of the screen which you can use. You will see three buttons at the bottom - Play Sound, Lost Mode and Erase iPhone - or iPad, as the case may be.
  1. Play Sound will play a loud alarm tone that will help you find your iOS device if it is nearby.
  2. Tapping Lost Mode opens up a page where you need to set a 4-digit passcode to lock your iOS device if it doesn't have one already. If it already has a passcode, then you can use this button to lock the phone remotely, so other people can't use it.
  3. In Lost Mode, you can also enter a phone number and a message that will be displayed on the lock screen. You can enter messages like, "Hello, please return my iPhone. Contact me now". You can also track your device this way.
  4. The Erase iPhone (or Erase iPad) button deletes all the data on the the iOS device, in case you're worried about sensitive data falling into the wrong hands. However, you won't be able to use Find my iPhone to physically track the phone after you erase it.
The features mentioned above are accessible via the Web too. Just head to iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID. The steps and buttons are the same otherwise.

Android

The Android Device Manager works similarly to Find My iPhone. You can either use the device manager on the Internet, or download the app, to use from another Android device. The tracking is on by default. This is how you use it:
  1. Sign in with your Google Account - the same one as the missing phone.
  2. Now you'll see your Android device on the top left.
  3. If it isn't the one you're looking for, click the tiny down arrow next to the device name and select the correct device from the list.
This shows you the location of your missing device, but again, there are three options you can chose from: Ring, Lock and Erase.
  1. Clicking Ring will make your device ring - useful for finding the phone if it is nearby - just missing in your home or office, for example.
  2. Click Lock if you've lost your phone.
  3. In the pop-up, enter a new password, and click on Confirm. You can also enter a recovery message and your phone number. These will be displayed on the lost device.
  4. Click Lock when you're done to lock the device remotely.
  5. To locate the device, click the GPS icon on the top-right of the box, next to the pencil icon. You need to have location access enabled on your Android device for this feature to work. The device can now only be unlocked using the password you just set.
  6. The Erase button performs a factory reset on your device, which is important if you believe you can't recover the phone. But once you do this, then much like Find My iPhone, the Android Device Manager will also not work.
If you have an Android device, you can also track your lost device using the Android Device Manager app - after you log in with the same Google account as the missing device, the steps are the same.

The BlackBerry Protect service also has these same features, but you'll need to turn BlackBerry Protect and its tracking service on first. If you haven't lost your phone yet, make sure these settings are on.
  1. Go to Settings > BlackBerry Protect.
  2. Flip the BlackBerry Protect switch to On.
  3. Tap Location Services.
  4. Flip the Location Services switch to On.
  5. Tap Back to save changes.
To find your missing phone, just follow these steps:
  1. Click View Location.
  2. If the service can find your phone, its location will appear on a map.
As with the other
  1. You can click the Play Sound button to make your phone ring loudly. This will help you find it when you've forgotten the phone behind the couch cushions.
  2. Display a Message lets you show a custom message on your homescreen even if the device is locked
  3. Lock Device lets you set a new password, and locks the phone.
  4. Wipe Device performs a factory reset, but once you do this, you can't track the phone again.

Windows Phone

Windows Phone users also need to make sure that the Find My Phone setting is enabled on their devices, so the first thing to do is turn that on now, when you still have your phone.
  1. On your phone go to Settings > Find My Phone.
  2. Check Use push notifications... and Save my phone's location periodically and before the battery runs out to make it easier to find.
  3. Go to Settings > Location and flip the switch to On.
Now, you can use the browser on your computer or another device to find your phone if you misplace it or lose it in any other way. This is what you need to do:
  1. Go to the Windows Phone website and sign in with your Microsoft account.
  2. Your Windows Phone device will show up at the top.
  3. Click Find My Phone to locate your device.
  4. If you haven't checked Use push notifications... mentioned in step 2, Microsoft will ask you to set up SMS based alerts. If you are in India, you need to scroll down all the way and select "Bharat" written in Devnagri script.
  5. If you are setting up SMS alerts, enter your phone number, click the check box below and click Done.
  6. Clicking Find My Phone (above the map) will locate the device on the map.
After you've found your phone on the map, you can carry out certain functions, as with the other platforms.
  1. Ring makes the phone ring, so you can locate it if it is nearby.
  2. Lock asks you for a new password, and locks the phone, so other people can't use it.
  3. Erase deletes all data on the phone, but you can't track it after this.

Smart-watch-wearing Hyundai owners just gained more remote control over their vehicles thanks to a new Android Wear version of the company's Blue Link app. The app gives drivers the ability to access remote vehicle operations right from their wrists, such as starting and stopping the engine, locking and unlocking the doors, and activating safety features like flashing the headlights or honking the horn.  The app connects any Android Wear watch to the Blue Link smartphone app via Bluetooth, and there's no range limit — the controls can be accessed from anywhere as long as there's a data connection. It also takes advantage of Android Wear's voice control capabilities, allowing for commands like "start my car," or "lock my car." The Blue Link system was originally launched in 2012 and is available in a number of Hyundai's 2015 models like the Sonata, Genesis, and Azera.

Not in a military sense of course. This robot kit has a wireless webcam and it can be controlled remotely with your computer (either a PC or a Mac) using either an ad hoc wireless connection or a WiFi access point. Also, it is possible to control the robot through the internet. From the above mentioned you can understand that this can be a very educating toy. Theoretically, it could be used for more serious applications too. However, user feedback reveals some issues that could make such applications difficult.
