How to Back Up Your Android Smartphone

If your phone crashes unexpectedly, or worse gets lost or stolen, then you'll not just be down the cost of a phone, but also a huge amount of data. To get around that, you need to enable cloud backups for as many things as possible, so that logging your account into a new handset transfers most of your data automatically. But not everything can be backed up that way, and that's why it's still important to take regular backups of your phone.

While some third-party apps like Titanium Backup and Helium will let you take a full backup your Android smartphone, they are not for everyone. Most users don't know about rooting their phones, or want to mess around with installing ADB drivers. No worry, it may take a few more steps, but you'll get there (almost).

Here's how to back up almost any Android smartphone.

Backing up to the cloud

On your phone, go to Settings > Accounts & sync.
Under ACCOUNTS, and tick mark "Auto-sync data". Next, tap on Google. Now, tap on the Gmail ID you used to sign onto the phone.
Here, you can turn on all the options so that all your Google related information gets synced to the cloud. This includes your contacts, photos (uploaded to Google+, privately if you want), app data, calendar events, Chrome tabs, your Google Fit data and more.
Now go to Settings > Backup & Reset.
Check Back up my data.

This will save app data and all of your phone's settings including Wi-Fi passwords to your Google account. When you sign in using this Google account on another phone, all of your preferences, photos (via Google+), and contacts will be imported automatically. This data is synced regularly and you just need to log into another device with the same account to recover it. This does not cover your text messages and various other types of data - you'll have to back them up yourself.

Locally back up media, messages and apps
Next, you'll want to save the music, movies and other media you've saved on your phone's memory card. This process is easy - just connect your phone to a PC and copy everything that's in the microSD card. This is a manual process so you'll need to make a routine of doing this.

Media

Connect your phone to the computer with a USB cable. If you are on a Mac, make sure you have the Android File Transfer application installed before you do this.
Open My Computer on your PC, or Finder on your Mac.
Navigate to the SD card and copy all the files you want to save to your computer.
After the copying is done, you can unplug your phone.

Text Messages

You can easily save all your text messages and call logs to your Gmail account by using an app called SMS Backup+. Try these steps:

Download SMS Backup+.
Open the app and tap Connect.
Pick your Gmail account from the pop-up.
Now grant SMS Backup+ permission to access your Google account.
Now go back to the app and tap Backup. This will save all your text messages to your Gmail account.
Log in to Gmail from any Web browser and on the left side you'll see a new label -SMS. Click it to view all the text messages that have been backed up.
To restore these messages, just tap Restore in SMS Backup+.
Tap OK in the pop-up.
You'll be asked to set SMS Backup+ as your default SMS app. Tap Yes. This is needed to restore messages.
Now the app will automatically restore all your messages and call logs. Once the process is complete, the app will show a pop-up that restores your default SMS app. Tap Yes.

Apps
The next step is to back up and restore installed apps. You can re-download apps easily if you're using the same Google account on the new device - just open Google Play, tap the hamburger icon (three horizontal lines) on the top-left > My apps. You can install all previously purchased apps from there.

On the other hand, a local backup could be faster to restore, and wouldn't waste bandwidth either. And it's also pretty easy to do.

Download ES File Explorer.
Swipe the screen to the right to reveal the Homepage of ES File Explorer.
Tap APP which is under a blue Android robot icon on the top-right.
Tap and hold any app until you see a checkmark on its icon.
Now tap the tick-mark icon on the top-right, the one inside a box with a dotted frame. This will select all apps.
Tap Backup that's on the bottom row. This will save a copy of the apk files of all your apps.
To view which apk files have been saved, tap User apps at the top. From the pop-up, select Backed-up Apps.
Tap any app's apk file here to install that app without Internet.
To save a copy of these files to your computer, connect your Android phone to a PC via USB.
The phone will appear in My Computer like a pendrive. Open it.
Go to Internal Storage > backups > apps.
Copy all the apk files here. In case you format your device, or change handsets, you can quickly copy these apk files to it and install the apps again by placing them in the same folder on your phone, and then following steps 7 and 8.

By following these steps, you're able to save a copy of all your contacts, text messages, media, apps, Wi-Fi passwords, and your app data. Of course, doing everything one by one is a little cumbersome, and the best way to back up your phone is to use a third party backup tool. We've used Titanium Backup and it is excellent but it requires root access on your Android phone, which is something typically expected from more advanced users. Even its interface is too clunky for most average people.

Helium is a great app for those who haven't rooted their phones. It has a nice interface too, but it only works with select Android phones from some international manufacturers. If you bought a phone from Micromax, Karbonn, Lava or countless other brands, you won't be able to use Helium. Further, using Helium requires you to install drivers for the phone on your computer as well.

How to find your lost phone

Many of peoples have expensive phones and are buying new phones day by day. Normally we can heard the news that someone's phone is stolen or lost. You can also be the part of them. Just think you bought a new expensive phone or you have already that and your phone is lost. It feels like you lost your girlfriend/boyfriend or your wife/husband tell you for divorce. It is a big problem to find or track your phone. Maybe you just not get upset for your phone more than your private and important data, contacts, messages and applications. Now after reading this blog you can track your phone, backup and delete your data from phone remotely. Before you start shopping for your next handset, there are a few things you can still try. All major smartphone platforms offer an easy, built-in method to track your device when it's not with you, and they are extremely effective too.

iPhone

You can use Apple's Find My iPhone service and can track a phone's physical location, and more. But it needs to be switched on - hopefully, if you've already lost your phone, then Find My iPhone was already on, but if you still have the phone with you, the first thing you want to do is turn this setting on.

On your iOS device, go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone.
Make sure that the switch next to Find My iPhone is in the green on position.

You can now track your iOS device using an app on another iPhone or iPad, or using the browser. This is how the app works:

Download the Find My iPhone app on your iOS device.
Sign in with your iCloud account - the same one you're using on the iPhone you're trying to find.
Now all the devices that are signed in to that iCloud account will be listed in the app.
Tap any device to see its location.

In case you've misplaced the iPhone, then this should help you track it down, but you will see some more options at the bottom of the screen which you can use. You will see three buttons at the bottom - Play Sound, Lost Mode and Erase iPhone - or iPad, as the case may be.

Play Sound will play a loud alarm tone that will help you find your iOS device if it is nearby.
Tapping Lost Mode opens up a page where you need to set a 4-digit passcode to lock your iOS device if it doesn't have one already. If it already has a passcode, then you can use this button to lock the phone remotely, so other people can't use it.
In Lost Mode, you can also enter a phone number and a message that will be displayed on the lock screen. You can enter messages like, "Hello, please return my iPhone. Contact me now". You can also track your device this way.
The Erase iPhone (or Erase iPad) button deletes all the data on the the iOS device, in case you're worried about sensitive data falling into the wrong hands. However, you won't be able to use Find my iPhone to physically track the phone after you erase it.

The features mentioned above are accessible via the Web too. Just head to iCloud and sign in with your Apple ID. The steps and buttons are the same otherwise.

Android

The Android Device Manager works similarly to Find My iPhone. You can either use the device manager on the Internet, or download the app, to use from another Android device. The tracking is on by default. This is how you use it:

Go to Android Device Manager.
Sign in with your Google Account - the same one as the missing phone.
Now you'll see your Android device on the top left.
If it isn't the one you're looking for, click the tiny down arrow next to the device name and select the correct device from the list.

This shows you the location of your missing device, but again, there are three options you can chose from: Ring, Lock and Erase.

Clicking Ring will make your device ring - useful for finding the phone if it is nearby - just missing in your home or office, for example.
Click Lock if you've lost your phone.
In the pop-up, enter a new password, and click on Confirm. You can also enter a recovery message and your phone number. These will be displayed on the lost device.
Click Lock when you're done to lock the device remotely.
To locate the device, click the GPS icon on the top-right of the box, next to the pencil icon. You need to have location access enabled on your Android device for this feature to work. The device can now only be unlocked using the password you just set.
The Erase button performs a factory reset on your device, which is important if you believe you can't recover the phone. But once you do this, then much like Find My iPhone, the Android Device Manager will also not work.

If you have an Android device, you can also track your lost device using the Android Device Manager app - after you log in with the same Google account as the missing device, the steps are the same.

BlackBerry10

The BlackBerry Protect service also has these same features, but you'll need to turn BlackBerry Protect and its tracking service on first. If you haven't lost your phone yet, make sure these settings are on.

Go to Settings > BlackBerry Protect.
Flip the BlackBerry Protect switch to On.
Tap Location Services.
Flip the Location Services switch to On.
Tap Back to save changes.

To find your missing phone, just follow these steps:

Log in to the BlackBerry Protect website.
Click View Location.
If the service can find your phone, its location will appear on a map.

As with the other

You can click the Play Sound button to make your phone ring loudly. This will help you find it when you've forgotten the phone behind the couch cushions.
Display a Message lets you show a custom message on your homescreen even if the device is locked
Lock Device lets you set a new password, and locks the phone.
Wipe Device performs a factory reset, but once you do this, you can't track the phone again.

Windows Phone

Windows Phone users also need to make sure that the Find My Phone setting is enabled on their devices, so the first thing to do is turn that on now, when you still have your phone.

On your phone go to Settings > Find My Phone.
Check Use push notifications... and Save my phone's location periodically and before the battery runs out to make it easier to find.
Go to Settings > Location and flip the switch to On.

Now, you can use the browser on your computer or another device to find your phone if you misplace it or lose it in any other way. This is what you need to do:

Go to the Windows Phone website and sign in with your Microsoft account.
Your Windows Phone device will show up at the top.
Click Find My Phone to locate your device.
If you haven't checked Use push notifications... mentioned in step 2, Microsoft will ask you to set up SMS based alerts. If you are in India, you need to scroll down all the way and select "Bharat" written in Devnagri script.
If you are setting up SMS alerts, enter your phone number, click the check box below and click Done.
Clicking Find My Phone (above the map) will locate the device on the map.

After you've found your phone on the map, you can carry out certain functions, as with the other platforms.

Ring makes the phone ring, so you can locate it if it is nearby.
Lock asks you for a new password, and locks the phone, so other people can't use it.
Erase deletes all data on the phone, but you can't track it after this.

The Cicret Bracelet will project a tablet interface onto the user's arm

As wearable technology continues to evolve and define the space, as well as redefine mobile in general, we get to enjoy the hatching of new ideas. It really is quite remarkable, as seeing a completely new set of ideas form and become an entirely new, tangible product does not happen that often. With wearables gaining some traction, smartphones and tablets are by no means the only mobile devices around nowadays. Now, though, Cicret is looking to take things a step farther and turn your arm into a smartphone.

The Bracelet comprises a pico projector and a row of eight proximity sensors that point towards the user's forearm. It operates as a standalone device and, when activated with a twist of the wrist, projects an Android interface onto the users arm. The proximity sensors detect where the user's finger or fingers are and allow them to interact with the interface as they would any other Android device.

It should be interesting to see if the Cicret Bracelet can improve on the technology, to make something we'd actually want to use. There is one more interesting feature in this device is that it is water resistant. You can also use it with wet hand. In below image its an example of using this device in bath tub.

The device will allow users to browse the web, send and receive emails and play games. It will also be possible for users to pair it with an existing smartphone, answer incoming phone calls and activate the speakerphone functionality on the their smartphone. The Cicret Bracelet features an accelerometer and a vibration module, along with an LED for notifications. Connectivity is provided by way of WiFi, Bluetooth and a Micro USB port. It is expected to be made available in 16 GB and 32 GB models.
